Tension between Athens and Moscow
As Kathimerini reported, “the Greek government decided to expel two Russian diplomats and ban the entry into Greece of two more, accusing them of intrusion into domestic affairs and illegal acts against Greece’s national security. Athens is accusing the Russian diplomats of efforts to extract and circulate information, and to bribe Greek state operatives.”
High-level Greek diplomat sources point to the effort by Russia to intervene in a sensitive domestic issue like the agreement between Greece and FYROM over the name.
“All states must respect international law as well as the Greek government and the Greek state … (Greece) will not tolerate any kind of behavior that violates international law,” said government spokesperson Dimitris Tzanakopoulos.
